Frederick Soddy — Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt (1926). Soddy was a Nobel-winning chemist who argued, decades before anyone else did it seriously, that money and physical wealth are different things and that conflating them is the root of recurring economic crisis. He named the divergence between monetary signal and physical referent as an active source of dysfunction, not a curiosity. CE inherits the energy-accounting move itself; energy-income-inheritance and money-as-signal are direct intellectual descendants. CE's delta is the forward-looking value frame — Soddy was diagnosing the error, not proposing an alternative accounting. He showed that the signal had drifted; CE proposes what the signal should have been tracking.

An informed reader, finishing the essay, has a right to ask who said what already, and what is actually new here. This page answers that question seriously. It is also part of the living-epistemic-work format — every proposition carries an epistemic status, and the framework as a whole owes the same accounting.
It is not a bibliography. It is a structured statement of debts: who established what, what this work inherits, where the specific delta lies. Where the delta is thin, the predecessor stays as predecessor — there is no need to overclaim novelty against a thinker whose work this one largely follows.
CE's specific claim
Configuration Economics argues that economic value, properly accounted, is the maintenance and extension of configurations that keep the reachable set of life-supporting futures open under bounded exergy flux. Value is not throughput, not preference, not labour-hours, not aggregated welfare. It is what a move does to R_living(C, B, T) — the configurations reachable from the current state, under available exergy, over relevant horizons, in which living entities continue to exist and make distinctions. The unit of evaluation is the local change in that reachable set, Δω, not a global scalar over states. That move — configuration-under-exergy as primitive, observer-relative reachable set as object, local Δω as decision rule, no-regret preservation as objective — is what the rest of this page situates against its predecessors.
1Physical grounding
Where the energy-and-entropy register entered economics, and where the strong-sustainability case was built.
Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen — The Entropy Law and the Economic Process (1971). The foundational work of thermodynamic economics. Georgescu-Roegen argued that the economic process is fundamentally dissipative, that entropy is the correct accounting unit, and that neoclassical growth theory violates physical law. CE inherits throughput-as-cost (throughput-cost), physical foundationalism, and the entire register of the argument. CE's delta is on the value side: Georgescu-Roegen's framework is rigorously diagnostic about dissipation; CE attempts a positive measure — what the configurations actually do for future possibility. exergy-not-energy tightens Georgescu-Roegen's "low entropy" into the more precise "exergy," and the chess-moves frame (option-space-as-chess-moves) gives the diagnostic a decision procedure he never claimed to provide.
Herman Daly — Steady-State Economics (1977), For the Common Good (1989, with Cobb), and four decades of ecological-economics work. Daly made Georgescu-Roegen's argument concrete: scale, distribution, and allocation as three distinct problems; critique of Solow on substitutability; steady-state as alternative to growth. CE inherits the substitution-limits argument, the critique of treating physical and financial capital as interchangeable, and the ecological-economics baseline that natural capital is not freely substitutable by manufactured capital. CE's delta is the move from steady-state-as-target to no-regret-over-moves (viable-objective). Daly constrains throughput at a level; CE evaluates configuration changes by their effect on the reachable set. The two frames are compatible — CE's stance entails throughput restraint in most regimes — but the decision procedure differs.
2Configuration as primitive
Where configuration itself became an object of analysis: how arrangements enable further arrangements, how complexity is measured, how capability grows over time. Split into two sub-rooms — the first names the structural mechanism, the second names how the mechanism shows up as economic dynamics.
2aConfiguration space dynamics
The local-mechanism case for how configuration enables configuration, and the structural-physics case for what that implies about time itself.
Stuart Kauffman — The Origins of Order (1993), Investigations (2000), and the "adjacent possible" concept. Kauffman named the local mechanism by which configuration enables configuration. Each new arrangement makes nearby new arrangements reachable that were not reachable before; the space of the possible is not given in advance but generated by what already exists. He developed this for biology — auto-catalytic sets, the origin of order — but the move generalises. CE inherits the adjacent-possible intuition directly: R_living(C, B, T) is, in spirit, the adjacent possible restricted to life-persisting observers and bounded by an explicit exergy budget. CE's delta is the restriction itself — the observer-class and the budget make the object accountable in a way Kauffman's more discursive treatment does not require. Kauffman is the conceptual ancestor; CE adds the constraints that turn it into an accounting frame.
Sara Walker, Lee Cronin, and the Assembly Theory programme — Assembly Index (early 2020s), Sharma et al., Nature 2023, Walker's Life as No One Knows It (2024). Cronin's Assembly Index began as a backward-looking measure of molecular complexity — the minimum number of construction steps required to produce an object — and CE has cited it since 2025 as exactly that. The 2023 Nature paper and Walker's 2024 book reframe assembly forward: the universe's trajectory through configuration space is, on their reading, what time itself is; what exists is constrained by what has been assembled, and what becomes possible is constrained by what now exists. This closes, from their side, the gap CE had been citing — that Assembly Theory was backward-only and CE needed a separate forward measure. The honest update is that Assembly Theory has been doing more of CE's work than CE was crediting; the framings are closer than the 2025 draft suggested. CE's delta in the current state of the art is the observer-class restriction (R_living rather than reachable configurations simpliciter), the exergy-budget and horizon parameters as accounting primitives, and the move-evaluation decision procedure on top of the state-space description. CE and Assembly Theory now overlap more than they diverge; the relationship is collaborative rather than corrective. The configuration-generates-configuration proposition treats Walker and Cronin as a load-bearing structural predecessor and Kauffman as conceptual ancestor.
2bCapability accumulation
Where the configuration runaway shows up as economic and technological dynamics — capability per unit input, combinatorial technology, evolutionary economy.
Buckminster Fuller — Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth (1969), Critical Path (1981), and the concept of ephemeralisation. Fuller's "doing more with less" is the operational case of the configuration runaway. Capability per unit input grows over time because accumulated configuration — tools, methods, knowledge, design templates — lowers the cost of new configuration. A modern car carries more capability per kilogram than a 1920s car carried per ton; the gain is not in the matter but in the arrangement. CE inherits Fuller's instinct that the right register for productivity is capability-per-input, not output-per-hour, and that the trend is configurational. CE's delta is the constraint side. Fuller was congenitally optimistic about how far ephemeralisation could run; CE pairs the configuration-runaway with the binding constraints (binding-constraint) — sinks, specific materials, biosphere integrity — that govern which configurations remain stable at all. Fuller saw the gain; CE accepts the gain and adds the floor.
W. Brian Arthur — Increasing Returns and Path Dependence in the Economy (1994), The Nature of Technology (2009). Arthur's work on increasing returns, path dependence, and combinatorial technology gave economics a non-equilibrium register and a story for how technology actually evolves: existing components combine to form new components, which then become available for further combination. CE inherits the combinatorial-and-path-dependent framing and treats Arthur's technology-as-recombination as a special case of configuration-enables-configuration. CE's delta is the physical substrate. Arthur grounds the combinatorial dynamics in technology and economic interaction; CE locates them in the broader configuration space including bodies, ecosystems, institutions, and infrastructures, with exergy as the explicit budget (configuration-not-information blocks the easy slide to pure-information abstraction).
Eric Beinhocker — The Origin of Wealth (2006). Beinhocker's synthesis of complexity economics for a general audience framed wealth as encoded design / fit-to-environment information, accumulating through evolutionary processes of variation, selection, and replication. CE inherits the evolutionary, non-equilibrium framing and the claim that wealth is structural rather than monetary. CE's delta is again on substrate. Beinhocker's "fit design" tends toward an algorithmic or informational reading; CE insists that configuration includes physical maintenance, embodied skill, and ecological relation, and that none of these reduces to information that could be copied at near-zero marginal cost (configuration-not-information).
3Complexity, resilience, and breakdown
Where the trajectory of complex systems through time — accumulation, maintenance overhead, regime shift, collapse — became analytically tractable.
Joseph Tainter — The Collapse of Complex Societies (1988). Tainter's thesis: complexity has diminishing marginal returns. Societies invest in complexity to solve problems; returns decline; eventually maintenance cost exceeds benefit and the system simplifies abruptly. CE inherits Tainter's complexity-maintenance argument near-directly (complexity-maintenance). CE's delta is the framing. Tainter is historical-comparative and predicts when systems break; CE locates the same phenomenon inside an option-space frame and asks which configurations are option-space-preserving in the first place. Note honestly: Tainter's thesis is contested in historiography; CE inherits the structural insight without committing to the universality of the historical pattern.
C. S. Holling — adaptive cycle and panarchy work (1973 onwards). Holling's adaptive cycle (exploitation, conservation, release, reorganisation) and panarchy (cross-scale interactions among cycles) gave ecology a way to talk about systems that are stable through change rather than stable in place. CE inherits the stability-as-adaptation framing (stability-not-stasis) and the cross-scale interaction picture that polychess later dramatises. CE's delta is the observer-relative restriction. Holling's adaptive cycle is observer-neutral — the cycle runs whether or not a particular class of life persists; CE evaluates moves specifically against R_living, which makes some adaptive cycles option-space-positive and others not, even where Holling's framework treats them symmetrically.
Brian Walker and David Salt — Resilience Thinking (2006). Walker and Salt operationalised Holling's resilience concept for management practice: maintain the system's capacity to absorb disturbance without flipping into an alternate regime, and recognise when a flip has occurred. CE inherits the threshold-and-regime register, which sits behind transition-fragility and asymmetry-of-option-space-change. CE's delta is the asymmetry argument made explicit. Walker and Salt name the thresholds; CE argues that breakdown is structurally faster than build-up, and that this asymmetry is what makes the no-regret rule operationally tighter than expected-value optimisation. Resilience thinking diagnoses the regime shift; CE prices it.
4Labour, allocation, and what economies actually do
Where economics was challenged on what it counts, who it counts, and what it ignores.
Karl Polanyi — The Great Transformation (1944). Polanyi argued that labour, land, and money are not produced for sale and therefore are not really commodities; treating them as such required a violent reorganisation of pre-market society. The "commodity fiction" is his central move. CE inherits the recognition that labour's market form is historically unusual and structurally strained. CE's delta is the analytical step Polanyi did not take: labour was functioning as an allocation mechanism for access to life-supporting configurations under scarcity, not as the source of the value those configurations carry (labour-as-allocator). Polanyi makes labour's strangeness as a commodity legible; CE supplies the specific allocator-vs-source distinction.
David Graeber — Debt: The First 5,000 Years (2011), Bullshit Jobs (2018). Debt documents that wage labour is historically unusual; most of human economic life ran on credit, obligation, gift, and kinship rather than on hours-for-coin exchange. Bullshit Jobs observes that a substantial fraction of contemporary paid work fails the practitioner's own usefulness test. CE inherits both: Graeber supplies the historical texture for labour-as-allocator (wage labour as one allocator among several) and the empirical symptom (work-as-access-ticket) that labour-as-allocator explains as expected output of an allocator retained after the regime it was allocating in has shifted. CE's delta is the accounting frame Graeber did not articulate. His framing is anthropological and political; CE locates the same phenomena inside a configuration-and-allocation grammar that says why the symptoms appear when they appear.
Marshall Sahlins — Stone Age Economics (1972), and the substantivist tradition. Sahlins's argument that "the economy" in pre-market societies is embedded in kinship, ritual, and ecological relation — and that allocation of life-supporting goods happens via mechanisms other than wage labour — gives the historical record for labour-as-allocator. CE inherits the evidence base. CE's delta is interpretive: where Sahlins makes the substantivist case against universalising market economics, CE makes the structural case that any allocation mechanism (wage, kinship, command, ritual) can be analysed by what it allocates and how well its allocator tracks the configuration-contribution it is allocating against.
Marilyn Waring — If Women Counted / Counting for Nothing (1988); Nancy Folbre — work on care and the invisible economy. Waring demolished GDP's treatment of unpaid care; Folbre has extended the argument for decades. Feminist economics as a tradition has argued that the most economically essential activities are the ones most invisible to standard metrics. CE inherits this critique directly: care-as-configuration is a consequence of taking this tradition seriously, and participation-limits echoes the unconditional-participation argument. CE's delta is the physical grounding. Where feminist economics has often made the case morally and politically — we should value care — CE attempts to ground it configurationally: care is maintenance of arrangements that preserve R_living, and the moral claim follows from the structural one rather than carrying it.
James C. Scott — Seeing Like a State (1998). Scott named the active power of legibility. States and large institutions can only act on what they have made legible to themselves, and the process of making things legible can destroy the practical (metis) knowledge that made the thing work in the first place. High-modernist schemes — collectivised agriculture, planned cities, scientific forestry — fail in characteristic ways for this reason. CE inherits Scott's argument near-directly: legibility-truth-tradeoff names the same phenomenon at the economic-accounting layer. CE's delta is the placement inside the option-space frame — legibility-induced loss is one of the ways option space contracts under bureaucratic action, and the tradeoff has a price standard accounting cannot see. Scott is the historical-political case for the structural argument CE makes; CE renders it in terms of R_living and Δω rather than in terms of state-power as such.
5Decision under deep uncertainty
Where the practical question — how to act when you cannot compute the optimum — got rigorous treatment.
Dave Snowden — Cynefin and complexity-management practice (1999–present). Snowden's distinction between complex and merely complicated problem domains, and his insistence that complex domains demand entirely different practice — probe-sense-respond on the next-best-move rather than analyse-plan-execute on the optimal solution — is the operational ancestor of CE's chess-moves frame. CE inherits the local move-evaluation stance directly (option-space-as-chess-moves); Snowden's "vector measurement" (where + direction of change) sits behind Δω's structure as a directional rather than scalar object. CE's delta is the physical grounding of the vector. Snowden is deliberately anti-quantification in the complex domain; CE retains a forward-looking measurement aspiration (option space as research programme) and narrows to the life-persisting observer class where Cynefin is generic across complex domains. Snowden's frame is methodological — how to act; CE attempts ontological — what value is.
Jean-Pierre Aubin — Viability Theory (1991, and subsequent volumes). Aubin gave a rigorous mathematical formulation of admissible trajectories under non-empty constraint sets — under what conditions can a system stay inside a constraint envelope indefinitely, and which trajectories preserve that capacity? CE inherits Aubin's apparatus as the mathematical anchor for the no-regret form of viable-objective: preserve R_living non-empty for every major class of life over every relevant horizon. CE's delta is what gets to be in the constraint set. Aubin's viability is a general framework; CE specifies that the constraint is structural persistence of life-as-category under explicit exergy and horizon parameters, and adds the asymmetry argument (asymmetry-of-option-space-change) as a structural reason to prefer viability-preservation over expected-value maximisation.
James P. Carse — Finite and Infinite Games (1986). Carse drew the distinction this work's objective turns on. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning and ends when someone wins; an infinite game is played for the purpose of continuing the play, and its rules exist to keep the game going and to bring new players in. Where Aubin gives the mathematics of staying inside the viability envelope and Snowden the stance of playing the next move rather than solving the board, Carse names what that staying-in-play is for. CE inherits the distinction as the name of its telos: the viable objective (viable-objective) is the rule of an infinite game — it admits no winning move, only the refusal of game-ending ones — and the work has framed itself this way from the outside in, as an invitation to an infinite game whose point is not to win or finish it but to keep it going and bring others in. CE's delta is the substrate. Carse's vision is philosophical and social; CE gives the infinite game a thermodynamic and ecological body — the play that is kept going is the making of distinctions by living systems, R_living under bounded exergy, with moves evaluated by their local effect on it (option-space-as-chess-moves). Carse names the purpose; CE supplies the physics of keeping it in play. The pairing with Buckminster Fuller (cluster 2b) is deliberate: Fuller gives the generative means — ever more with ever less, in service of all life — and Carse gives the purpose those means serve.
6Scoping and growth limits
Where the question — does growth have to mean throughput growth — was pressed hardest.
Jason Hickel — Less Is More (2020). Hickel's degrowth case foregrounds the empirical evidence that absolute decoupling of GDP from energy and materials has not happened at the rate or scale required for biosphere stability under continued growth. CE inherits the seriousness of the decoupling-evidence engagement (essay §2 now does this directly) and the willingness to name growth-as-throughput as the operative problem. CE's delta is the configurational reframe: rather than arguing for less throughput as a moral or political stance, CE argues that the operative thing being mismeasured is configuration-quality, and that the right move is to change what is counted as growth, not only to reduce throughput. Compatible orientations, different decision procedures.
Tim Jackson — Prosperity Without Growth (2009, 2017). Jackson's argument that prosperity can be decoupled from throughput growth — that flourishing within ecological limits requires reframing the goal of macroeconomics — is the closest predecessor to CE's viable-objective stance in mainstream policy economics. CE inherits the reframing instinct and the rejection of growth-as-default. CE's delta is the formal apparatus. Jackson's argument is largely empirical-and-rhetorical; CE attempts to ground the same orientation in an explicit decision procedure (local Δω on R_living) with explicit physical and observer parameters.
Kate Raworth — Doughnut Economics (2017). Raworth's doughnut sets a bounded operating space — above a social floor, below an ecological ceiling — as the target zone for economic activity. CE inherits the bounded-operating-space framing and the recognition that ecological limits are economic objects, not externalities. CE's delta is the move from a static target zone to a dynamic move-evaluation rule. The doughnut names the envelope; CE evaluates each move's effect on whether the envelope continues to exist for all major classes of life. The two frames are compatible — CE's stance respects the doughnut's bounds — but CE's unit of action is the move rather than the position.
7Foundational meta-theory
The author's prior work in foundational ontology, treated as preferred vocabulary rather than required grounding.
Tom Cassidy — Distinction Physics (2025, ongoing). Distinction Physics is a meta-theoretical framework deriving the structure of accessible reality from two axioms: distinctions cost energy, and observers have finite energy budgets. From this it derives quantisation, thermodynamics, and a treatment of consciousness as self-referential distinction-making. CE was originally framed as the 2026 application of DP — value as configurations expanding future distinction-making potential. The v0.2 direction (April 2026) decoupled CE rhetorically: CE's main argument now stands on non-equilibrium thermodynamics and ecological economics, and DP is offered as preferred foundational vocabulary rather than required grounding. CE survives if DP drifts. The DP coupling remains available as one specific formalisation; the proposition set does not depend on it. This is the only self-citation that belongs on the lineage page — and it sits as its own meta-theory cluster rather than inside physical grounding because the register is different: DP is foundational ontology, not economics.
What CE adds that none of the above gives
The lineage above maps where CE inherits its register, its measurement frames, its decision-procedure instincts, and its specific propositions. What none of the predecessors gives, taken individually or together, is the following short list of moves that constitute CE's actual contribution:
- Observer-relative
R_livingas the object of evaluation. The "for whom" question gets a structural answer (life-persisting observer class, after Wolfram's Observers Like Us) rather than a utilitarian aggregation or an unmarked anthropocentrism (observer-relative-option-space). - Local

A note on novelty
This page exists in part because of a specific worry: the framework could read as a single individual claiming to have figured out economics. That worry is legitimate and the page is one of its answers. Configuration Economics is not claiming to be without predecessors. The format requires marking what was inherited and what is new; this page is part of the framework's epistemic discipline, not a claim to originality.
Where predecessors did the work, they are credited. Where the delta is thin, the predecessor stays as predecessor. The point is to make the lineage visible so that the genuinely novel moves — observer-relative R_living, local Δω, the asymmetry-and-generativity pair, the living-epistemic format — can be assessed on their own merits rather than dismissed as restatement or accepted as originality without examination.
