Configuration Economics

A Living Epistemic Work

v0.1 — Working Draft

How would you like to approach this?

The Same Work, Different Projections

The content exists as a structure of relationships. Your intent determines which projection you see. Each mode reveals the same underlying work through a different lens.

Alexander — the epistemic guide — threads through every mode, adapting register to the resolution you're reading at. There is no separate "guided" mode because every mode is already guided.

Overview

See the whole structure. Core claims, relationships, and how ideas connect. The map before the territory.

Essay

Linear reading. Traditional narrative flow. Start at the beginning and read through to the end.

Explore

Graph mode. See connections. "What relates to this?" becomes navigable. Follow your curiosity.

Research Frontier

What's open? What's contested? Where are the edges of current thinking? The living boundary.

Epistemic Status — Visual Language

Different claims have different standing. The visual language makes epistemic status immediately apparent, without requiring explanation.

Forming

The entry rung — published, live, not yet load-bearing

Thinking that has entered the work in public but has not yet settled. There is no backstage and no "draft": a node enters here and climbs the spine where you can watch it.

Established

Physics precedes preference

Matter is conserved. Energy flux is bounded. Entropy increases globally. These are foundational constraints that any economic system must respect.

Derived

Treating savings as income produces instability

This follows from the distinction between energy income (flux) and energy savings (stock). Conflating them creates false signals that cannot persist.

Contested

Transition dynamics and timeline

How quickly can throughput-based systems shift to configuration-aware accounting? Multiple views exist on feasibility and pathway.

Open

Precise measurement of option space

How do we quantify "future configurability"? This is acknowledged as an open research question requiring further development.

Guide Integration

The Guide is context-aware — it knows what you're reading and can surface relevant connections, explain at different resolutions, and acknowledge what remains open.

Energy Income vs Savings

A foundational distinction: energy income refers to continuous renewable flux — solar radiation, wind, ecological cycles that provide ongoing energy availability.

Energy savings, by contrast, are finite stocks accumulated over deep time — fossil fuels, mineral concentrations, groundwater reserves.

Treating savings as income produces false signals of prosperity and value. It enables consumption patterns that cannot persist beyond the depletion of the stock.

Resolution Layers

The same content exists at multiple depths. Surface understanding connects to increasingly precise formulations. You can stop at any level or go deeper.

Core Claim
Value is about what enables future possibilities, not what gets consumed.
Formal Definition
Value = configurations that increase future option space for living systems under bounded energy flux.
Implications
This distinguishes value from price, preference, labour, or throughput. Short-term gains can be value-negative if they reduce future configurability.
Open Questions
How do we measure option space? What time horizons? How do we handle trade-offs between different living systems? These remain active research areas.

"The form implies the function"

This is a format exploration for Living Epistemic Works — a new publication format where content exists in superposition until the reader's intent causes collapse into an appropriate projection.

Configuration Economics will be the first work published in this format.
