A canonical node. Configuration Economics' own subject, stated once so that nothing has to restate it. CE, Distinction as Primitive, Zenjin and SSi reference this node; they do not restate it (the never-twice rule applied to our own ideas). Everything quoted is Tom's own text or existing repo canon, cited by path; connective prose is marked [ASSEMBLER], per the convention of distinction-physics/docs/canonical/scaling-is-the-primitive.md.
Status, precisely. §1 is RULED — the trinity ruling of 2026-08-24 and the axiom named in the CE RIG v1 world design of 2026-08-30. §§2–4 are DERIVED AND SHIPPED: they restate propositions already carrying contested/derived status in src/content/propositions.ts, and the status each carries there is the status it carries here. §5 (the selector face) is FORMING — it is published note-work, not yet in propositions.ts, and its own note says so. §6 (the join) is STATED HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME, on canon that already exists, and is the one thing in this document that awaits Tom's ruling. §9 lists honest gaps. The framework's central open problem, option-space-measurability, is inherited unresolved and is not resolved here.
1. The primitive
Ethics: selection over configurations, denominated against heat death. What to do is a matter of which configurations get selected, and the denominator is the one that does not move.

That is the primitive. It is one of three legs — ontology is distinction networks, epistemology is the persistence of stable distinction patterns, ethics is selection over configurations — and it is the leg Configuration Economics is the working-out of.
The same primitive is named again, in CE's own repo, as the axiom the rig is built to make refutable:
Good choices increase the total space of all possibilities — measured globally and trajectory-long, never locally.
Heat death is the zero of possibility space. The axiom and the mechanism are one statement at two scales.
CE is an accounting system for total possibility space.

[ASSEMBLER] The two statements are one statement. "Which configurations get selected" is the operation; "increase the total space of all possibilities" is the criterion the selection runs against; "denominated against heat death" is what makes the criterion non-arbitrary. Nothing here is to be softened into "prioritisation", "decision-making under uncertainty" or "values alignment". Selection is the word.
The primitive against distinction — the two-primitives ruling. [Added 2026-09-03. Status: FORMING, not RULED like the rest of this section — it comes from Tom's 2026-08-19 session as recorded in the estate's mission archive, whose own record ends "Ratification and a canonical DP node still Tom's call."]
Desirability is a comparison WITH A DIRECTION. Comparison detects difference; it cannot rank it. Two primitives: distinction (detects difference) and selection (orders it). Norms, rights, taste = selections over comparisons, frozen into agreements — justice is collectively frozen selection, beauty individually frozen selection. Estate mapping: DP is the project of the first primitive; CE is the project of the second — least action is selection in physics, desire in an organism, taste in Tom. "The scarce thing is the selector" = of the two primitives, distinction is cheap and selection is dear.

[ASSEMBLER] This is the primitive's relation to distinction in one breath: comparison alone cannot rank — direction is a second thing. It also grounds §5 from the other side: "the scarce thing is the selector" is not only an observation about the work; of the two primitives, distinction is cheap and selection is dear, which is what makes the scarce thing the selector.
2. The denominator, and why it is named rather than derived
Heat death is the founding frozen selection: CE does not derive its ought from its ontology, and the system is sound exactly because it says so out loud.

[ASSEMBLER] This is the load-bearing honesty of the whole primitive and it must not be smoothed. CE does not claim to have crossed the is–ought gap. It names one selection — the direction away from the state in which no distinction can be made — as frozen, and then does everything else by accounting. In the rig's world the claim is made literal: the heat-death state scores exactly zero, because in it every action is a no-op and the reachable cone is a single frozen state (NOTES-ce-rig-v1-world-design.md §5). The denominator is the one that does not move; everything above it is measurement.
3. Selection is over MOVES, not over states
The primitive is not a scalar to maximise. It is a criterion over what gets selected next, and CE already ships that distinction as its own architecture.
viable-objective(P22,contested): "Prefer changes that keep the reachable set of life-supporting configurations open for all major classes of life across all relevant horizons. Reject changes that asymptotically close that reachable set for any such class at any such horizon." Its own premise names the reason: "Single-scalar maximisation requires an aggregation rule that trades off against some class of life it weighs lightly."option-space-as-chess-moves(derived): "Option space is evaluable locally as the differential effect of moves, even where it is not computable globally as a state measure." The chess engine does not compute the tree; it asks whether this move opened the position or closed it. Directional is enough to play.CLAUDE.md, "The Viable Objective", holds the v0.2.0 reframe and the split it turns on: "State-comparison is the static frame (partial order over configurations); move-evaluation is the dynamic frame (Δω over horizons). Both are needed."coordination-as-move-evaluation(contested): coordination in a generative economy is "distributed, local move-evaluation across multiple boards" rather than the discovery of one clearing price. A market is a selector with one board and one number; this is the claim that the economy's selection problem is larger than that.
[ASSEMBLER] There is a real tension inside the canon here, and it is printed rather than resolved. The rig axiom says possibility space is measured globally and trajectory-long, never locally (§0, with the razor-blade case standing as the counter-case for local measurement). option-space-as-chess-moves says the evaluable quantity is the local, directional Δω. These are compatible only if local evaluation is read as an estimator of a global, trajectory-long quantity — which is what the razor-blade case exists to discipline. That reading is stated here as a reading. It is not ruled.
4. What follows, already in the canon
Each of these is the primitive doing work; each carries its own status in src/content/propositions.ts and this node does not upgrade any of them.
- The asymmetry that makes selection conservative.
asymmetry-of-option-space-change(derived): destruction is fast and local, expansion is slow and systemic, so "a fast-local certain destruction cannot be reliably offset by a slow-systemic uncertain expansion." No-regret is not temperament; it is the tighter rule under the asymmetry. - What selection has to select from.
configuration-generates-configuration(contested): each configured arrangement makes further configurations reachable that were not reachable before, and "value is not stored in configurations as a stock; it is produced by configurations as a flow into the adjacent possible." - What binds.
binding-constraint(derived): not energy influx — ~175 PW in against ~18 TW dissipated — but sinks, specific materials, and biosphere integrity.pattern-intelligence-constraint(forming, the load-bearing one): "the possibility space yields to action × pattern-intelligence" — action is the fuel, and pattern-intelligence is the faculty that approximates the least-action trajectory to a configuration that does not yet exist, "doing deliberately what nature does for nothing." - What kind of game the selection is in.
infinite-game(contested): the objective is "the rule of an infinite game: make no move that ends the play." - The definition it all serves.
value-option-space(contested): value = configurations that expand future option space under bounded energy flux. - The open problem it inherits.
option-space-measurability(open, the framework's only one): the global state measure has no rigorous procedure; the move-level measure is operational. This node inherits that gap intact.
5. The second face — the selector is the scarce thing
The same primitive appears in CE's own working notes pointed the other way: not at configurations in the world, but at candidate configurations of the work itself.
- "The scarce thing is the selector (the fitness function), not production" —

Agents firehose reasonably-good content cheaply, which defeats assessment rather than aiding it. - The candidate fitness function for the process, from the same note: "At every decision point, prefer the move that leads to more reachable configurations, not fewer — applied recursively, to the method as well as to its outputs." The note flags it as affirmative where
viable-objectiveis defensive, and as inheriting the same measurement gap one level up. - The structural selector, not the curatorial one.
src/content/open/NOTES-four-candidates-and-the-capture-rule.md: "The threshold for capture is existence, not merit. Merit is decided by the climb, in public." And: "This is the DNA arrangement: mutation capture is promiscuous; selection prunes later. The pile is not the firehose problem — the firehose problem was a pile with no structural selector, and this work has one." Restated inNOTES-treatment-spec.md: "The spine's entry ramp is the selector; rationing the door duplicates it badly." - Where the selector sits in the method.
NOTES-six-hat-method.md: "Blue is the selector seat" — and the two human seats, Red (the gut) and the final Blue (the verdict), stay human. - Search, not optimisation.
NOTES-iterative-search-method.md: optimisation "picks the least-bad option from a fixed set — which accepts the trade-offs that set contains and crystallises the space at its current shape"; search expands the set. "A trade-off is a hypothesis that the frame is too small, not a law of nature." And the residue: "the human is the irreducible box-breaker who injects the genuinely different frame." - What can be handed over and what cannot.
NOTES-observer-architecture.md: "Specifications delegate: a fitness function, a rubric, a gate, a method can be written down, installed, and run without their author. Continuities do not."
6. The join — one primitive at two scales
[ASSEMBLER] The join is not invented here; it is stated in the canon and this section only makes it explicit. NOTES-recursive-fitness-and-bridge-test.md performs it in one sentence: "value = configurations that expand future option space under bounded flux, but pushed one level up — the method that produces configurations must itself be judged the same way."
So the two faces are one primitive at two scales:
- Scale one — selection over configurations in the world. The criterion is
viable-objective; the operation is Δω over moves; the denominator is heat death. - Scale two — selection over candidate configurations of the work itself. The criterion is the same criterion; the operation is the settledness spine and the Six-Hat gate; the denominator is the same denominator.
What makes this a single primitive rather than an analogy is that the argument for scale one is the argument for scale two, unchanged. configuration-generates-configuration says the reachable set grows with what has already been configured; pattern-intelligence-constraint says the active constraint on the reachable is the search, not physics. A method is a configuration. Improve it and the reachable set of configurations it can find grows — which is the same claim, applied to the thing doing the applying. NOTES-iterative-search-method.md states this self-consistency directly: "Search is the method made self-consistent with the theory."
The recursion has a floor, and the floor is named. At scale two, one part does not delegate: the frame-breaking, the gut, and the verdict (§5, the last three bullets). That residue is not a temporary gap in automation — the observer-architecture note argues it is a continuity rather than a specification, and continuities cannot be written down. The primitive therefore describes a system that selects recursively down to a human seat and no further.
This is the one thing in this node awaiting Tom's ruling. The two faces are named in the canon; the identification of them as one primitive at two scales is stated here for the first time.
7. A worked instance of a selector, already built
The settledness spine is CE's own selector, running: entry at forming is free, climbing is expensive and public, and status is a trajectory rather than a label (src/content/status-history.ts; /motion; /explore). The capture rule is exactly the design decision that follows from putting the selector on the ladder rather than at the door (NOTES-four-candidates-and-the-capture-rule.md), and it is grounded on asymmetry-of-option-space-change: an uncaptured idea is gone; a weak captured one sits at forming costing nothing.
It is offered here as an instance, not as a general specification of selectors. Specifying the selector remains an open line (§9).
8. The gates that make a selection auditable
A selection nobody can check is not accounting. The gates the canon already carries, all from NOTES-ce-rig-v1-world-design.md §0, all Tom's own terms:
- The narrative is the expert instrument of the ethics. "It makes selections auditable and refutable, with falsifiability for free."
- The narrative gate: "a reasonable narrative for why a choice satisfies better × simpler × cheaper, checkable by a hostile second reader — the brother-in-law test."
- The triad (borrowed from Landry): "agent × non-agent × the relationship between them. A good decision furthers all three. Every classic ethical failure is a one-term optimisation."
- The lens rule: "the possibility space must increase for all components through any lens — a move that needs a favourable lens has failed."
The Six-Hat method (NOTES-six-hat-method.md) and the treatment spec (NOTES-treatment-spec.md) are these gates made runnable; the CE RIG (NOTES-ce-rig-v1-world-design.md) is the attempt to make the criterion refutable in a world small enough to compute exactly.
9. Honest gaps — where the canon is silent
Stated rather than smoothed, per the standing rule.
- The global measure.
option-space-measurabilityis unresolved and is not resolved here. Local Δω is operational; the state-level scalar is not. - Global-and-trajectory-long versus local Δω. The tension printed in §3 has no ruling. The razor-blade case is the standing counter-case for local measurement and is another worker's document; it is not written here.
- The strongest CE specimen is now written down — with a correction to this bullet's own premise. [Updated 2026-09-03; the original read "Tom's Jeremy Vine account exists nowhere in the estate… awaiting Tom's own account".] The finding now has a canonical node at
docs/canonical/the-jeremy-vine-finding.md, FORMING — and its primary source turned out to be Aran Jones's account, not Tom's: the Talk Bollocks corpus (persisted 2026-08-29, after this node was written) carries Aran telling the story to Tom on 12 December 2020. The node's own §3 is the ledger of what that testimony does and does not support. - The selector has no specification.
src/content/open/BACKLOG.mdline 28 still names it as an open intellectual line, and this node states the primitive rather than closing it. What is externalisable (the fitness function, the gates, the method) is named; the irreducibly-human residue — truth, frame, aliveness — is named as residue and not analysed. - The affirmative form is not canon. "Actively maximize the expansion rate, at every decision, recursively" (
NOTES-recursive-fitness-and-bridge-test.md) is stronger thanviable-objective, which is defensive and no-regret. The canon carries both; nothing rules on which governs when they diverge. - Selection alongside distinction.
distinction-physics/docs/canonical/scaling-is-the-primitive.md§8 records the same gap from the other repo: "Selection as a primitive alongside distinction is stated in conversation and in the trinity summary… there is no separate canonical node for it in this repo." This node is CE's answer; whether Distinction as Primitive wants its own is Tom's call.
10. The reference contract
This node is the single canonical statement of the selection primitive. CE, Distinction as Primitive, Zenjin and SSi reference it; they do not restate it. Anything needing the primitive cites this node by name and path, so there is one place where it can be corrected.
